Preach all you want, but who will save me?
Katie was relieved when Adam had assured her that he was alright, hoping it was the truth. She had stayed securely in Adam’s comfortable arms for the entire ride. As soon as the van came to a sudden stop, she saw the back door slowly open, and the two men appear – one of them carrying Adam away from her. Suddenly, she felt the other man swoop her up into his arms, as they carried the both of them away from the van and into a small abandoned warehouse in the middle of nowhere – perfect; now it was exactly like a movie. She suddenly felt her body being thrown against the floor, landing close to Adam.
Katie heard Adam scream in pain as soon as he hit the ground, and since she was pushed afterwards, she didn’t care how much it hurt when she fell, she was concentrated on Adam, and how painful his scream sounded. Soon enough, the two men walked away, locking the wooden door to the small room, and she saw Adam slowly make his way towards her, asking her if she was alright – he was always worried about her, never about himself. “I’m fine, I’m fine, are you okay? You sounded like you were in a lot of pain,” she replied, starting to inspect her boyfriend, making sure he was alright.
Adam nodded, “Yeah, yeah, I’m fine.” He said, a quiet breath escaping his lips. “It hurt, but I’m fine.” He said, moving his right hand up to cup his girlfriend’s cheek, his thumb rubbing against her skin gently. “We’ll be okay—I promise.” He said, kissing her cheek softly, hoping her words reached her ears. Although he was nervous about what would happen to them, he had confidence that they would be okay. Adam moved back a bit, his back leaning against the wall as his arms stayed wrapped around Katie’s waist. “We’ll get out of here. Someone will come looking for us.” He said, looking around the room a little bit. Thousands of questions swarmed his mind as he held Katie in his arms. Why would they take us? What did we do to them? Where are we? How do we get out?
He did his best to push those thoughts out of his mind, but every time he pushed one away, another one popped into his mind. His hand moved up and down Katie’s back a bit, the familiar movement bringing peace to his mind. He rested his head on top of hers, his eyelids becoming heavy. “I’m tired - I think I’m going to try and get some rest, then tomorrow I’ll try to figure out a way to get us out of here.” He said, kissing the top of her head a bit. “Try to get some sleep, beautiful. It’ll help you.” He said, resting his head on hers again. “I wish I could give you my jacket—but I don’t have one. If you get cold though, wake me up and I’ll figure something out.” He said, a yawn falling from his lips. “Goodnight, Katie.” He said, his eyelids fluttering closed as he fell asleep, Katie still being held tightly in his arms.

Preach all you want, but who will save me?
Katie rolled her sapphire eyes at Adam’s question, “Of course I’m alright, I’m just worried about you.” She replied, as she held onto Adam tightly – Adam was the one who fought whilst she froze up on the spot. Katie felt instantly relieved when Adam guaranteed that tonight wasn’t her fault, although part of her kept thinking that it was. This man was following her last night, and she was stupid enough to come back out for another run at night, and worse of all, she brought Adam – she included Adam in all of this – what kind of a girlfriend was she? She stayed securely in Adam’s strong arms, choking back sobs, as he reassured her that this wasn’t her fault.
Katie suddenly heard Adam’s voice throughout the medium sized van, asking the two men sitting in the front seats where they were planning on taking them. “You’ll find out,” she heard as a malevolence chuckle escaped his lips. She closed her eyes, taking a deep breath, as she tried to stop new tears from falling from her eyes. She hid her head in Adam’s shoulder, as she held onto him tightly. His arm was securely wrapped around her slender waist, as she looked up at him with her confused and tearstained azure eyes, wondering how Adam was staying so strong in the midst of all this while she was a nervous wreck – she really did have an amazing and brave boyfriend.
As they continued down the road, Katie could only wonder what these men wanted with them, and where they were even taking them. They had not even given them a motive behind this kidnapping – they just took them, leaving Katie to speculate what it was that they wanted. She felt somewhat safe in Adam’s arms – she always felt secure and protected in his arms – but she knew that wherever these strange men were taking them; the outcome was not going to be good. She had seen movies where people got kidnapped – this all felt too much like a movie. Part of her wished she could just close her eyes, wake up safe and sound in her bed, and all this was just a lucid nightmare. She wanted to believe that she and Adam were both safe, however, they weren’t, and she knew that.
A soft chuckle erupted his lips when she rolled her eyes. “I’m so glad - don’t be.” He said, giving her a gentle squeeze. “I’m fine. Don’t worry about me.” He held onto her tightly, rubbing her back slightly as he took a deep breath, looking back out the front window once more. Adam croaked out a soft ‘okay’ when she said they would find out, his mind preparing for the worst. His mind began to wander to possibilities of what would happen to them once they reached their destination, and all he could do was hope for the best. He felt her hide her head in his shoulder, his head gently resting on hers as they drove. He looked down at her, moving his head away slightly so he could look down at her easier. He noticed the tears that stained her usually bright eyes, and he couldn’t help but feel his heart break at the sight of his girlfriend so scared and upset.
“We’re here.” The first man hissed, the van screeching to a stop as Adam’s back hit the side of the van, a quiet cry escaping his lips. The door opened quickly, the larger man grabbing Adam’s back, pulling him out of the van, releasing his grip from Katie. As much as Adam wanted to fight back and try to escape then and there, he knew that the chance it would work was very slim, and it could end up making their outcome even worse. The other man grabbed Katie, his arms clenching around Katie tightly, dragging her out of the van, right after Adam. The two men dragged Katie and Adam out of the van, pulling them into a tall, grey building that was sitting on a vacant lot. They pushed them both into a small room, throwing them onto the ground forcefully. Adam hit the ground first, followed by Katie who was pushed shortly after Adam.
A yelp of pain escaped Adam’s lips as he hit the ground, his arms flailing up to shield his neck and head as he hit the ground. The two men chuckled darkly, slamming the door to the small, dusty room shut before he heard footsteps walk away. And after a moment, he couldn’t hear the footsteps anymore. He looked over at Katie, scooting closer to her quickly, wrapping his arms around her, pulling her flush against his chest. “Are you alright? Did it hurt? Break anything?” He questioned, looking down into her eyes, biting down on his bottom lip a bit as he waited for an answer.

Preach all you want, but who will save me?
Katie honestly thought everything would be fine – they were almost back at her house and the man had seemed to be long gone, until she felt Adam’s entire body freeze up. She looked up herself to see the dark blue van that had just appeared around the corner and stopped a few feet behind them. She looked over at the backdoor just in time to see the mysterious man that had bumped into her and her boyfriend just earlier slowly emerge. Sure, she knew tae kwon do, and she was extremely excellent at it, but at that moment, she felt her entire body freeze up – she had never had to experience anything like this before, and somehow, all of her knowledge about tae kwon do and self defense somehow seemed to have escaped her mind and body.
Katie felt Adam slowly detach his hand from hers as the man they still had no clue who he was started rushing towards her. She was actually scared – for once in her life, she was actually absolutely 100% terrified. She heard Adam screaming as he started fighting the mystery man. She watched in complete fear – part of her knowing that she should just ignore her fright and panic, and just go help her boyfriend, but she couldn’t move, she was absolutely paralyzed with fear, when suddenly another man was behind her, sweeping her off her feet. As soon as her feet left the ground, she started to fight back, although she had a hard time, since the man already had a good grip on her.
Katie looked over at Adam in absolute panic, but she didn’t scream. She unexpectedly saw the first man appear in her point of view again and pick up Adam, as they were both thrown roughly into the back of the dark blue van. As the doors slammed shut, she sat there in complete horror. This man and his friend (were there more or just the two of them?) had thought this through entirely. They had probably been spying on her and Adam for weeks now. Katie and Adam weren’t dealing with idiots right now – idiots, she had no doubt they could handle, but right now, they were dealing with proficient kidnappers.
Katie looked over at Adam, looking over him, seeing as how he was the one who fought the entire time. “Are you alright, Adam?” She had to admit, she had never been so afraid in her entire life. As soon as she felt the van starting to move, she quickly maneuvered to give Adam a hug, as she broke into tears. “I’m so sorry about all of this, Adam. I was stupid; I shouldn’t have asked you to come with me. I should’ve known better.” The tears freefell from her eyes, and soon her cheeks were covered with her tears, hoping Adam wouldn’t be disappointed in her and her dim-witted decisions tonight.
Adam nodded, feeling his body begin to ache. “I’m fine, I’m not important.” He replied. “How are you though, are you alright?” He asked quietly, concern for his girlfriend laced through his voice. He wrapped his arms around her, holding her flush against his chest as she began to cry, tears pricking at his own eyes as he heard her sob. “No, no, it’s not your fault.” He reassured her. “You’re not!” He said, kissing the top of her head. “I’m glad I came with you, you would of been all alone here if I hadn’t. It’s okay baby, really.” He said, hoping she would believe his words. He rubbed her back gently, trying to stop the tears from flowing his eyes, hoping that she would calm down.
As the van continued to move down the street, Adam held onto her tighter - almost as if he were to let go, the world would end. His protective instincts were going crazy, and the only thought that crossed his mind was ways of keeping her safe. He didn’t care what it took, he would protect her and he would escape with her. Adam looked up, trying to see out the windshield to see if he knew where they were. Not being able to see clearly, he decided to speak up. “Uh, excuse me?” He called, his grip on Katie tightening. One of them men turned around and looked at Adam, “Yeah?” He said, Adam’s breathing hitching slightly. “W-Where are you taking us?” He asked, fear evident in his voice. “You’ll find out.” The man replied before turning around, chuckling as they continued to drive down the road.

Preach all you want, but who will save me?
Katie rolled her sapphire eyes in amusement, as Adam continued to act cocky – she kind of enjoyed having some healthy competition with her boyfriend, for once. She smiled as she felt his arms wrap gently around her slender waist. “Hey, I am absolutely not surrendering. Forgive me if I was thinking about your health before going on a run,” she pouted humorously, although she tried her best to keep a serious face, but found it impossible. She took a deep breath, and grinned – this moment was perfect. Even though most of their dates (was this considered a date?) were all memorable and perfect in their own ways.
Katie scoffed under her breath as soon as she felt Adam unwrap his arms from her waist, and continued to run off. Sure, she wanted some friendly competition, but she thought they could at least spend more than five minutes having some time to themselves. She shrugged it off quickly, running behind him at a leisurely pace. She wasn’t mad at him, not at all, she appreciated the fact that he would come out at night and run with her, concerned for her safety after her encounter with that mysterious man last night.
Katie was running at a steady pace, not too far behind Adam, when she saw him stumble onto the ground after swiftly turning at the next turn. She quickly sped up to see what was going on, but before she got there, she saw Adam get pulled back to his feet. Before she could get to where Adam was, the man started walking away and towards her. As soon as she saw the same trashy face that had bumped into her just last night, she tried her best not to completely freak out. She saw the man smile nonchalantly at her from under the same black hood that covered his face the previous night. As soon as she looked over her shoulder to make sure the man was a decent distance away from her and her boyfriend, she quickened up her pace until she finally reached Adam.
Katie looked over Adam quickly, making sure he wasn’t hurt first. “Are you alright?” Even though what she experienced last night was only a small shove, seeing the same man two nights in a row, and then to have him crash into her and then her boyfriend couldn’t possibly be just a coincidence. “Adam, that’s the man that was following me last night. The one who crashed into me and apologized before just walking away, as if he wasn’t just following me,” she quickly grabbed Adam’s hand in hers and interlaced their fingers, before starting to walk back to the direction to get back to her house. “Come on, I really think we should get inside.” She said, trying to keep a calm and leveled voice, not wanting Adam to think she was scared, even though she was.
Adam looked at Katie, nodding his head. “Yeah, I’m fine.” He said with a smile, continuing to look at her. Eyebrows furrowing together, his jaw dropped a bit. “I-It was?” He stammered, looking back at the man for a moment before returning his focus back to Katie. “Katie, he must of been following you.” He said, biting down on his lip nervously. He grabbed onto her hand, squeezing her hand lightly - almost reassuring her that he was there, and that he would protect her, and keep her out of danger. He began to walk with her, his chest rising and falling quickly as he began to walk towards Katie’s house. “Yeah, that’s a good plan. Hold on, let me walk on the road side - if he comes around in a car, I’ll be the one to go first.” He said, walking around to her other side before grabbing her hand again, holding onto it tightly.
His nerves were continuing to grow as they walked towards her house, and suddenly Adam’s head shot up, eyeing a dark blue van that was screeching up beside them. Adam knew what was going to happen, and the only thing he could think of was letting go of Katie’s hand, pushing her over. “GO.” He demanded, walking closer to the road. The van came to a stop, the backdoor opening, the hooded man reeling once more. He knew exactly who the man was, it was the same man who Katie had described. The one who had bumped into both of them. Adam looked back at Katie, pointing down the street. “KATIE, MOVE.” He yelled, wanting to keep his girlfriend—the girl he loved more than anyone—safe.
The man hopped out of the van, rushing over to Katie at full speed, completely avoiding Adam. Adam quickly turned around and ran at the man full speed, arms extended. He was thankful for his diet, hopefully giving him some more strength. “Don’t touch her.” Adam demanded, jumping forcefully onto the hooded man’s back, toppling him to the ground. “Take me, leave her.” Adam said, trying his best to pin down the man. But unfortunately, the man was stronger than Adam, easily flipping him onto his back. He looked up at Katie, mouthing a simple ‘I love you’ to her before he went back to fighting his attacker.
While the first man hit Adam a few times, another man hopped out of the van and charged towards Katie, easily swooping her up off the ground. Adam looked at her in sheer horror, wishing there was something more he could do to help her. “NO.” Adam screamed, wondering why no one was hearing his cries. “Let her go, please.” He cried out, the first man stuffing his fist into Adam’s mouth - stopping his pleas from spilling out. The man stood up, removing his fist from his mouth for a moment before he picked Adam up, following the second man to the van, throwing both Katie and Adam into the back of the van. The first man locked the door before he walked around and hopped into the passenger seat, the other man starting up the loud engine, backing up the van from the road, starting to drive towards an undisclosed location.

Preach all you want, but who will save me?
Katie rolled her sapphire eyes playfully at her boyfriend’s competitive side. She giggled as she felt a small kiss on her earlobe, before he quickly pivoted and ran down the driveway. She promptly followed, making a swift turn at the end of the driveway and onto the sidewalk. She was surprised at Adam’s speed, to say the least, even though she wasn’t extremely far behind and was going at a rather slower pace than usual. She stayed behind him, running at a measured and steady velocity, her ponytail flopping from side to side as she ran. She followed Adam as they continued down the street, making another swift turn at the end of the street. She focused on her breathing and the movement of her arms and legs, making sure that each movement was balanced and stable.
As soon as Katie saw Adam decelerate and stop by a random parked car, she started to slow down herself and as soon as she saw him leaning against the car, she rolled her sapphire eyes again at him trying to act cocky. She came to a stop within a few feet from the car, and started walking up to him so she was directly facing him. She wrapped her arms around Adam’s neck gently, and stared at him with her bright azure eyes. “Wow, you never cease to amaze me, do you? Your health diet must be working.” Her lips curled into a miniature grin, as she held onto him tighter. “Are you sure you want to continue running? Perhaps we should just call it an early night…” She shrugged, not wanting Adam to feel like he had to be there, especially if he didn’t feel up to it.
Adam held a cocky smirk on his lips, a laugh escaping his lips as she approached him. He felt her arms around his neck, smiling down at her. “I try my best to keep you on your toes.” He said with a smile. “I guess it is, I’ll have to thank my mom when I get home.” He said with a laugh, his arms moving around her waist, holding onto her tightly. “That, I do. No way, who would of thought Katie Matlin would of surrendered.” He said with a laugh, kissing her cheek. “I’d like to keep running, unless you’d like to stop, then we can.” He said, leaving the choice up to her.
A deep smirk filled his lips as he leaned in again, his breath hot on her ear. “On second thought, I’m going to keep going. Keep up this time, Matlin.” He said, biting down on her earlobe before he wiggled out of her grip and began to run down the street again. He laughed lightly to himself as he ran, knowing that Katie could probably catch up to him this time, but because he got a head start, he knew there was a chance he could stay ahead of her.
As Adam turned the next corner, he smacked into someone, pushing him onto the ground. Adam huffed loudly as he smacked against the ground, shaking his head a bit as he looked up at the man he ran into. The man extended his hand to Adam, and he quickly grabbed it and was brought back up to his feet once more. “Sorry about that,” The man said darkly, “It’s alright.” Adam said, rubbing the leafs and twigs off of his body as the man walked down the street once more, leaving Adam alone with his thoughts. His body was slightly sore from the fall, so he decided to wait up for Katie before continuing his run.

Preach all you want, but who will save me?
Katie slammed her laptop shut after making plans to go on a late run with Adam at the park. She strode over to her closet to grab her black and white running sneakers - she was already wearing a dark red tank top and black running shorts. She quickly put on her sneakers, and tied the shoelaces tightly, before she walked over to her desk, to put on her wristwatch and her wrist key holder. She quickly threw her hair into a high ponytail, before exiting her bedroom, and slowly descending the staircase. She had decided to leave her iPod and earphones at home since she hardly ever brought it along with her when she had company - it was obviously less lonely when she had someone to run with.
As soon as Katie reached the bottom of the stairs, she saw Maya in the living room, watching television - a horror show from the sounds of it. “Hey Maya, I’m going out for a run with Adam, alright?” She paused for a moment, and looked around, realizing she didn’t know where in the house her parents were, before continuing, “Tell mom and dad I’m going out, okay?” After receiving a quick nod and an annoyed wave from Maya, she rolled her sapphire eyes, as she heard a few knocks coming from the front door. She quickly strode over to the front door, turning the metal doorknob to see Adam standing there, smiling back at her. She felt a large grin appear on her face, and gave Adam an enormous hug, wrapping her arms gently around his neck.
Katie quickly grabbed her house key from the glass bowl that was placed on a small table in the hallway and stuffed it into her wrist key holder, before joining Adam out on the porch. She made sure the door was securely locked, before she looked over at Adam with a playfully competitive look on her face, both of her hands resting on her waists, ”Are you ready, Torres?”
Adam smiled at his girlfriend, quickly looking her up and down, biting down on the inside of his cheek lightly as he took in what she had on. He smiled wider as she gave him a hug, his arms wrapping around her waist. He watched as she grabbed her house key, taking a step back on the porch, allowing Katie to step out onto the wooden porch with him. He looked over at her, a playful smirk playing on his lip. “You bet I am, Matlin.” He responded, leaning in to kiss her, but before his lips graced hers, he moved to the side and whispered into her ear, “Catch me if you can, baby.” He said with a smirk, placing a soft kiss on her earlobe before he pivoted on his heels and began to run onto the driveway, running onto the street. His pace was a good rate, and he was fairly confident that she wouldn’t catch up to him very fast - but on another hand, he was fairly certain that she would.
A soft laugh escaped his lips as he ran, his speed increasing with each step he took. Adam made sure to stay relatively close to Katie, making sure that he was being alert at all times, looking out for anyone who looks suspicious. A slight breeze hit Adam’s bare head as he ran, causing his head to become cold as he continued to run towards the wind. Although he wasn’t sure exactly where or when they were stopping, he was just enjoying running with his girlfriend. He silently thanked his mom for making him go on a diet, knowing that if he wasn’t on his diet she would of caught up to him a while ago. After running for a while longer, he stopped by a car, leaning up against it, a smirk playing on his lips as he waited for Katie to catch up to him.
